Body Mass Index (BMI) is a ratio of your weight to your height squared. It is the most widely used screening tool in the world — you will see it in doctor's offices, health apps, and insurance forms. The BMI Formula

Metric: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)²

Imperial: BMI = weight(lbs) × 703 ÷ height(in)²

Worked example: 70 kg at 1.75 m → 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9, squarely in the normal range. At 90 kg the same person would be 29.4 — overweight. A 60 kg person at the same height would be 19.6 — still normal but closer to the underweight edge.

These cutoffs come from decades of epidemiological data showing a J-shaped mortality curve: risk is lowest around 20–25 and rises at both extremes. They are population tools, not individual diagnoses.

The Healthy Weight Range

For a given height, the "normal" BMI band maps to a weight span. A 1.75 m adult's healthy range is about 57–77 kg. This range is a screen, not a verdict — two people at the same height and weight can have completely different body composition. A 1.60 m adult's range is roughly 47–64 kg. The range narrows as height drops because the squared term amplifies small weight changes.

BMI's fatal flaw is that it cannot separate fat from muscle. Muscle is denser than fat, so a muscular person weighs more per inch and scores high.
